I call it "Ab-Awareness"...always having my abs engaged, ready for anything. This not only keeps my abs constantly in a state of toning, but also helps with posture, core-strengthening and ideal center of gravity. Some eastern cultures call this 'Chi'.
By keeping your abs partially isometrically flexed at all times, you are doing your low-back much good, not to mention toning and strengthing your abs and core, and, you won't need to work them in the gym nearly as much.
Isometric flexing is my primary means of exercising my abs.
NEVER let your gut hang out. Always be aware of what your mid-section is doing. Do NOT accept a buldging belly: Even if your body fat percentage is a bit higher than you would like, take pride in your appearance and suck that gut in! It is not just vanity - it makes a difference in your metabolism, posture, core-function, and mental attitude!
